Reading the Feminist Classics on the Street – 7.21.10

Inspired by one of those dinner moments where someone says “we should do this,” and then you do, some friends and I are doing street readings of feminist classics – the texts that shattered ways of thinking about women and men’s roles, gender, sexuality and the structures of the world that reinforce how we live out gender. Race and Sexuality in the 21st Century

"In order to both address racism, structural economic inequality and sexism and in order to  "include" sexuality in a racial justice movement at every level, people of color communities must be wiling to engage in a drastic re-consideration of the heterosexism, of patriarchy in our communities, of our notions of family:  for example, no inclusive, anti-homophobic Asian movement can emerge without such a re-visioning of Asian family and culture." State of the Gay and Lesbian Union – OutGiving 1996

"We must strengthen the capacity of state-wide gay and lesbian organizations to defend and expand GLBT civil rights. State groups need help building their infrastructure so it reaches into every county and precinct; to register voters, educate them as to the state legislative agenda and make it easy for individual GLBT people to weigh in and to win." This talk was given on May 17, 1996 at the Gill Foundation's OutGiving Conference, which gathers donors to the LGBT movement. The Gill Foundation hosts this conference every two years.
